Did you know that the Vanda William Catherine orchid is named after Prince William and Princess Catherine? Bet you did not! On 15 April 1981, the Vanda Miss Joaquim var. Agnes was designated as Singapore's national flower. Since then, Singapore is the only nation to have a hybrid as its national flower, a designation befitting its multi-cultural ethnicity and harmony. Singapore's National Orchid Garden is home to a flourishing variety of over 60,000 orchids categorised into four coloured zones: the Spring Zone for gold, yellow, and cream-shaded plants; the Summer Zone for red and pink plants; the Autumn Zone for earth-coloured plants; and the Winter Zone for plants within the white and violet shade spectrum. For rare orchid species, you can visit the Tan Hoon Siang Mist House. Or you can also experience the Cool House, a smaller version of Gardens by the Bay, with temperatures similar to that of a high-altitude rainforest which allows orchids to thrive in this tropical country. Come on down and enjoy the sights and the smells of this magical garden today!
