Tranquil blue waters, stretches of sandy shores, and slouching palm trees - there is no better place for a relaxing getaway than along Sri Lanka’s coastline. Fondly referred to as the pearl of the Indian Ocean, to say that the country is known for its beaches would be a gross understatement. With the subtle sounds of waves gushing in the back, interrupted only by the occasional gust of wind, lay back and soak in the sun whilst sipping on a coconut. We’ve rounded up the top 5 beaches in Sri Lanka that’ll leave you feeling like you never want to get back home.
Bentota Beach
A beach town on its own, Bentota sits on the fringe of the Indian ocean with its own winding river nestled in-between. More than just beaches, the town is filled with spas and is home to one of the best water-sport facilities in the country. Of course, this is the place for simply unwinding on your vacation, but if you’re more on the adventurous side, be sure to try your hand at water skiing and canoeing!
Mirissa Beach
With soft white sand and palm trees lined up along the far-end edge, Mirissa beach is probably one of the more affordable beaches in Sri Lanka; the perfect budget-friendly spot for travellers. In the meeting point with a neighbouring beach, there’s a rocky pool with a relatively short rock that you can climb onto for a snapshot with an ocean backdrop that turns a little turquoise under the sunlight.
Mirissa boasts a Surfers Corner for those experienced to hit the waves. If you’re here in the months between December and March, this is the prime-time for whale-watching and even dolphins! Book a whale-watching excursion from the many local tour agents. And just when you think you’re done for the day, stop by a night party hosted by various beach bars along the area.
Negombo Beach
Conveniently in close proximity to the airport, Negombo beach is the perfect stopover for resting up after a long flight. Catch a boat ride around the ocean and explore the coral reefs. The blue lagoon is also the best place to do some bird-watching and the undisturbed waters makes it ideal for snorkelling and diving.
Weligama Beach
A little on the smaller side compared to its counterparts, this strip is known for its quiet serenity. Set along the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, Weligama, meaning ‘sandy village’, is where a fishing town meets the beach resort - picture stilt fishermen on one end and novice surfers on the other. While you are there, do also stop by and check out Taprobane Island, a tiny rock-island, home to a beautiful villa turned guest house built by Count De Maunay after his exile from France.
Polhena Beach
Sheltered by soft coral reefs that block the tides, the calm waters of Polhena beach make it one of the few in Sri Lanka that is suitable for both swimming and water sports alike. You’ll also be excited to hear that turtles are regularly spotted here - either watch them up-close from the balcony terrace or you might as well go snorkelling with them! This beach is also a local favourite and it usually gets quite crowded over the weekends.
