Berlin offers some of the best experiences especially for culture vultures and history buffs. However, the city also boasts some exciting adventure in nature if you are willing to explore the many quieter areas. If you find yourself in Berlin in the summer, make sure to visit at least one of the 3,000 lakes in the city to lounge and relax in the heat. Here are the top five picks of lakes you should definitely head on to!
Strandbad Wannsee
Well loved and best for families, Strandbad Wannsee is an easy pick for lakes to swim in with its white sand and classic architecture. You can watch sailboats travelling up and down the River Havel and during the warmer months, there are even playgrounds and slides. Perfect for groups with children, there are also many services around including showers, cafes and shops all around.
Muggelsee
The largest of Berlin’s lakes, Muggelsee is located in the east of the city and is home to a lakeside sauna and even a section for those looking to sunbathe in the nude! If you are looking for the perfect spot to lounge at on a hot summer day, this is your pick. The lake is also great for those not too confident in swimming as the first 100 metres are thigh-deep. The water however turns colder, deeper and clearer as you move inwards. The area around the lake is also popular for hiking and is definitely a great way to stretch your legs!
Schlachtensee
One of the most picturesque lakes in the city, Schlachtensee is the southernmost lake and is known for the cooling water and for the party vibe of the area. While there are no shops and cafes in the area, you can find many people who come to the lake bringing their own beers and food as they enjoy the atmosphere. Whether you want to sunbathe on the greener section of the lake or shaded micro beaches, this lake offers plenty of spaces for all.
Strandbad Plötzensee
Just 30 minutes away from Alexanderplatz, Strandbad Plötzensee boasts 740m of sand and a variety of refreshments sold in the area where you can just relax and hang out with your friends. Best for swimming as the sun sets, you can catch a breath here after a day of exploring the city. There is also a naturist zone, sports area and of course dining options to end your day at!
Krumme Lake
Sitting on the edge of the Grunewald forest, Krumme Lake has a number of sunbathing sections located over sandy beaches and small bays. Notably one of the most idyllic lakes, the banks by the waters are beautifully framed by willow trees and marshes. The main beach has ample facilities for swimmers and there is also a snack hut to fill your stomach as you enjoy the area!
