Dubrovnik is a paradise by the coast but there are also incredible destinations close by which you can transverse and explore. If you have some time to spare to enjoy more places by the Adriatic or somewhere not too far away, here are some day trips you can take!
The Island of Lokrum
Sitting just 600m away from the shores of Dubrovnik, The Island of Lokrum is perfect for those who are looking for a little day trip that is just a little bit away. All you need to do to get there is jump on a short ferry ride from Dubrovnik Old Town and you will be transported to a magical new place. Perfect during hot summer days, the island is the epitome of tranquility with trees aplenty! Make sure to stop and smell the roses at the Botanical Gardens, a garden planted in the 19th century. Wander and admire the ruins of Benedictine Monastery which exists since medieval time and can be found hidden amongst vegetation.
Cavtat
Close to the border of Montenegro, Cavtat is a quaint town devoid of the hustle and bustle of the city. Located just 20km south of Dubrovnik, this town is easily accessible by an hourly bus and is home to museums, palaces and even a mausoleum! This area is also well-known for the Mediterranean vegetation and the interesting historical heritage, perfect for the laid-back traveler.
Montenegro
A tiny country by the Adriatic sea and decorated beautifully by red-roofed villages on rocky hillsides, Montenegro is located just two hours away. This breath-taking nation is also home to antique Venetian villages and UNESCO walled cities, a thrilling adventure especially for the intrepid traveler. Indulge completely in the charms of this fascinating city!
Korcula
Just 20 minutes away on ferry, Korcula is a compact medieval old town where lush pine forests and vineyards flourish. Explore the many squares, monuments, palaces and more as you dive into the historical heritage of the area. The beaches on the island are also famous and well-loved, especially during the summer. In fact, there are over 50 beaches for you to choose from!
Mostar
Mostar is located in Bosnia and Herzegovina and steeped deeply in ethnic diversity and rich history. One of my personal favorite memories of visiting this beautiful city was exploring the old town in the late afternoon and enjoying a cup of traditional coffee as I watched people take up the challenge of jumping down the Old Bridge or Stari Most. If you are an adrenaline junkie, take up the challenge yourself and dive in the river!
Mijet National Park
For nature lovers and avid hikers, Mijet National Park is a large area that borders two saltwater lakes namely Veliko and Malo Jezero. Explore this thickly wooded island and admire the beautiful turquoise lakes!
The Elafifi Islands
Just a short boat ride away, The Elafifi Islands is located northwest of Dubrovnik and is perfect to escape from the massive crowds of tourists and to enjoy the sun. While there are over 13 islands, only three of them (the three largest islands) are permanently inhabited. Two of them, Kolocep and Lopud, are also car-free, making them the perfect places to enjoy nature, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. With its quaint villages and beaches, what’s not to love?
