Long layover in Frankfurt? We’ve got you covered. Here’s a plan to see the best of historic “Mainhattan” and still get back to the airport in time to catch your next plane. Hop on the S-Bahn and you’ll be in the city centre, Altstadt in less than half an hour.
Fuel up at Cafe Hauptwache
Located just steps from the train station is the historic Cafe Hauptwache. Serving authentic German fare at affordable prices, this is a great place to grab a bite if you’re feeling peckish. The outdoor seating is perfect for watching the world go by, especially in the gentle warmth of summer.
Visit the Stadel Museum
Take a jaunt through the lovely Innenstadt district and across the river Main to one of Frankfurt’s most iconic museums. Home to one of Germany’s most important art collections, over 700 years of art history can be found here. Rembrandt, Picasso, and Monet are just some of the originals that can be found here, not to mention their ever-changing range of exhibitions dedicated to old masters and modern pieces.
Have an authentic Hessen meal at Lorsbacher Thal
This historic tavern has been feeding hungry customers since the early 1800s, and is a mainstay of Frankfurt life. Take a short walk along the bank of the Main from the Stadel museum to get here. Be sure to try the Apfelwein – Germany’s answer to apple cider and a must-try drink when in Frankfurt. The Schnitzel with Green Sauce makes for a filling and authentic lunch option, as does the delightfully tender Pork Knuckle.
Walk off the calories in the Old Town
Feeling stuffed after lunch? Cross the river and return to Altstadt for one of the city’s main highlights. Frankfurt Old Town was severely damaged by World War II, and its beauty today is a testament to the locals’ love of their city. It takes about two hours to complete a walking tour of some of the town’s most important sights including St Bartholomäus Imperial Cathedral, Romerberg, and Haus Wertheim.
Pick up a souvenir from your adventures
Frankfurt isn’t short on shopping spots, so you’re sure to find something for even the pickiest of friends. Many of the souvenir stores are located near the old town, so there’s need to go far to find some good bargains. There’s Frankfurt-founded Jack Wolfskin for the outdoor adventurers, Kleinmarkthalle for the foodies, and the Kulturothek near Romerburg for adorable mementos of the town.
Get a bird’s eye view of Frankfurt from the Main Tower
Enjoy one last view of this stunning city from the perfect vantage point. The fourth-tallest building in Germany has an observation deck that offers a sweeping view of the city. Located 200 metres above ground, this is the perfect place to soak in the sunset over Frankfurt. Tickets cost less than ten Euros, and the observation decks are open till 11pm at night in summer, so guests can see the twinkling city lights from above.
With all your shopping and sightseeing done, it’s time to head back to the airport. Head to Taunusanlage station, a five-minute walk from the Main Tower, and hop on the S-Bahn to Flughafen Regionalbahnhof.
