Going on a family trip? Make Phuket your next destination! Though it’s known for its beaches, resorts, and memorable parties, there are in fact many activities that are fun and family friendly. We’ve got you and your family covered in our list of family-friendly ways to experience Phuket!

Green Elephant Sanctuary Park

Asian elephants are the world’s second largest land animals, and there is no better way to get up close and personal with them than at an elephant sanctuary. Green Elephant Sanctuary Park was opened by a Swiss, who operates it in accordance to European animal protection laws. Instead of elephant rides and shows that exploit these gentle giants, the sanctuary takes in formerly abused elephants and gives them a chance to live out their years in peace. Visitors can feed, pet and bathe the elephants. Tour packages also include a fun-filled XXL Adventure Shower that we’re sure your kids will love!

Island hopping at Phang Nga

Also known as Ao Phang Nga National Park, this area is surrounded by exquisite views of limestone formations, islets and clean waters. Much of the area also has official protection status, so you know that you’ll be venturing into unspoiled territory. The bay has appeared in James Bond and Star Wars movies, marking its status as one of Thailand’s natural wonders. Many local tour companies offer half or full day tours around Phang Nga, which will take you around the different points of attractions such as Hong Island, James Bond Island, the fishing village of Koh Panyee and the Buddha Cave Temple. If your children are older, you can even try kayaking and rafting with them on these calm waters!

Pubs, restaurants, cafes, and other food stalls make up more than half of this market, so be sure to make some space for all the food you’re going to end up trying there! Chillva Night Market is open from Wednesday to Saturday, 5pm to 11pm. Do take note that the market is closed on Sundays, so make sure to plan your weekends with this in mind.

You may want to hold on to your kids, as the market tends to get crowded. There are many interesting and kitschy stalls around. If you’re feeling nostalgic, look out for stalls selling DVD copies, or you can search for the unique second-hand shoe stall that’s bound to both confuse and amuse you! Phuket Old Town is the perfect place for you and your family to stroll along and admire the beautiful traditional architecture of the area’s buildings, which are reminiscent of a rich Sino-Portuguese past. Keep your eyes peeled for the well-maintained and exquisite heritage houses while you’re there. The Endless Summer Phuket is housed in a green mansion, and is both a coffee shop and boutique. The coffee shop retains much of the old-time feel of the place, and is where you can really feel like you’ve travelled back in time! China Inn and Raya Restaurant are also two dining establishments located in these traditional shophouses. By preserving much of the original facade and interior decor of the past, these buildings will give you and your family a different side of Phuket!

Lastly, you can’t go to Phuket without visiting at least one of its many beaches. While some of them are crowded with many sunbathing tourists, others are quieter and more family-friendly. Head down to Karon Beach that’s situated towards the west of the island. While the northernmost part of the beach is emptier, it’s not hard to find a spot for your family anywhere along the strip of pristine sand. The nearby Kata Beach is also a relatively tranquil beach, and has a viewpoint where you and your family can admire the views of the surrounding area. Kata Temple is also nearby, if you want to pay your respect to local deities or hide out from the sun.

With much to do for children young and old, don’t rule out Phuket on your next big family trip. For more things to do, you can look at our guide to the best natural activities you can do in Phuket, which are all certainly great fun for the whole family, too!
