Melbourne is not just known for its arts and culture, but also for its abundance of beaches. With many beaches present in Melbourne here are some must-see beaches located outside the city.

St Kilda

Melbourne’s most famous beach, St Kilda is where some of Melbourne’s biggest events or festivals. Located alongside Luna Park, this beach is perfect for all sorts of activities ranging from jogging to rollerblading to kitesurfing or even windsurfing. Interestingly St Kilda was named by a superintendent La Trobe after watching a boat named Lady of St Kilda dock off the beach in 1841. At the end of the iconic pier, there are also many restaurants and bars to relax while enjoying the sunset. You can even head to the breakwater to see little penguins burrowing in the rocks!

Brighton Beach

Home to the iconic Brighton Bathing Boxes, Brighton Beach is an ideal spot for sun-tanning, swimming, surfing, or even a stroll. We recommend heading here in the afternoon as it’s a great place to catch the sunset and an even greater place for your next Instagram picture. Take a picture in front of the 82 bathing boxes which date back to around the 1900s. The boxes are fully decked out with striking patterns and colours, and should be on any list of insta-worthy selfie locations.

Half Moon Bay Beach

This unique-looking beach is shaped exactly like a crescent which is where the beach got its name from. It is a calm, gentle and shallow beach making it very family-friendly; perfect for swimming or even boating. The shipwreck of HMVS Cerberus is located at Half Moon Bay Beach. The HMV Cerberus was a naval ship part of the Australian Federation in 1901. Cerberus Beach House is a popular restaurant to check out with gorgeous views of the bay, particularly at sunset. Their fish and chips are well-known in Melbourne as one of the best in town.

Popular among the locals, this beach is quite accessible as it is close to the city. This beach located in a trendy seaside suburb was actually Melbourne’s first seaport. Williamstown Beach is a 500m long, south-facing beach. This beach has a wide range of facilities from cafes to playgrounds, making it an ideal day out.

Considered to be one of the best beaches in the Mornington Peninsula, Sorrento Back Beach is our last recommended beach in Melbourne. This beach has plenty of restaurants and coffee shops along with beautiful scenery and clear water. Additionally, the beach also has a rock pool, a natural rock seawater swimming pool which is popular with locals as it is perfect for fishing and swimming!
