There’s plenty to do in Brisbane city, but venture just an hour out of the city limits for a natural adventure unlike any other. Here are our top day trips from Brisbane – most take just an hour by car!
Stradbroke Island
Known as Straddie to locals, this tropical paradise is a nature haven in all seasons. Watch whales in winter, or cosy up to koalas in summer. Ferries to the island leave from Cleveland, an hour from the city centre. The stunning North Gorge Walk is probably the most scenic walk in Queensland, flanked by rocky outcrops and crystal clear seawater.

Australia Zoo
Steve Irwin fans will want to make this one a priority. This 1,000-acre zoo was opened in 1970 by Steve Irwin’s parents and is where Steve himself learned to care for crocodiles and reptiles. Located just an hour north of Brisbane, this is the place to view Australian wildlife in their natural habitat. Steve’s famous Crocoseum is still preserved, and home to his beloved saltwater crocodiles, which feature in the daily Wildlife Warriors Show.

Noosa
Located just two hours from Brisbane, Noosa offers a pampering experience like no other. Shop fresh local produce at the Sunday Farmer’s Market, enjoy a relaxing natural spa at Lavender Moon, and enjoy fresh-baked goods at the Hastings Street Bakery. Prefer outdoor activities? You can also learn to go Stand Up Paddleboarding, snorkel with dolphins and turtles, and go kayaking through the everglades.
Here’s the ultimate guide to Noosa.
Mount Tamborine
Just an hour south of Brisbane in the famed Scenic Rim is Mount Tamborine, one of Queensland’s most popular natural wonders. Take a walk among the treetops at the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk, or relax with a glass of wine at one of the many vineyards in the hills. Keen hikers can climb to the peak of the mountain and enjoy 360-degree views of the Scenic Rim. Not much of a hiker? A hot air balloon will take you there too.

Lockyer Valley
Lockyer Valley is an hour west of Brisbane and is perfect for a relaxing day out. Buy produce direct from the farmer at the rustic roadside stalls, pet fluffy sheep at a traditional cheesery, and enjoy authentic German food at a family-run café. While you’re at it, check out Spring Bluff Railway station, a decommissioned station that is now home to well-manicured gardens that will steal your heart.
