There's a lot to do in Istanbul, but if you’ve got time to venture out of the city, there’s plenty of exciting experiences that await. Here’s our roundup of the best day trips from Istanbul based on your interest.
Amasya, for Nature Lovers
Tucked away in northern Turkey is this ancient town that dates back over 7,500 years. Home to famous figures such as the philosopher Strabo and Olympian Hamit Kaplan, this town is one of the most spectacular sights in Turkey. Relatively untouched by tourism, Amasya is home to sights such as the limestone tombs of the kings of Pontus, the Harsena mountain, and green valleys as far as the eye can see.
Troy, for History Buffs
This ancient city described in Homer’s Iliad was the site of the Trojan War. The site of the former city has a reconstruction of the famous Trojan Horse, which was used by the Achaeans to trick the Trojans into letting them past their impenetrable walls. Roman baths, theatres, and homes can also be viewed at the site of the ruins. Just an hour away stands another monument to a different war – the memorial for the soldiers who lost their lives in the Gallipoli campaign.
Cappadocia, for Adrenaline Junkies
Ever wanted to soar hundreds of metres above a valley in a hot air balloon? Cappadocia is the place for you. This breathtaking region is famed for its rugged terrain, fairy chimneys, and volcanic peaks. One of the most popular activities in Cappadocia is hot air ballooning – even if you want to stay on the ground, the view of the balloons from a vantage point in the valley makes for the perfect Instagram shot.
Sile, for Beach Lovers
Sile is one of the most picturesque seaside towns in Turkey. Located on the coast of the Black sea and home to less than 10,000 people, the town is famed for its beaches, lighthouse, and affordable food. It’s no wonder so many residents of Istanbul have summer homes in Sile, and flock here between the summer months of June and September. Work on your tan on the sand in the day, and then indulge in fresh seafood at one of the many coastal restaurants at night.
Belgrad Forest, for Hiking Enthusiasts
Looking to get some exercise on your trip? Lace up your hiking shoes and head to Belgrad Forest. Known as the “lungs of Istanbul”, this mixed deciduous forest is just 20 kilometres from the city centre, and is home to over 2,000 species of plants. There are more than 11 parks to explore within the forest itself, so make a day of it and go off the grid.
