If you don't already know, Hong Kong is home to various hiking trails to visit! There one for everyone, from kids to even dogs - you just have to find the right one for you! There is a myriad of hiking trails in Hong Kong - around 235 to be exact - and they come in all shapes and sizes. Long, short, high or low, there are so many to choose from. Instead of looking through all of them, we have come up with a list of a few for you to pick from!
For the Easy Hiker - Victoria Peak Circle Walk

If you are new to hiking, Victoria Peak Circle Walk is one of the simpler hikes in Hong Kong. While it being the simplest, it offers the most spectacular view of Hong Kong from above. This walk is accessible for all - even dogs! The view from the top is magnificent, as it towers over Hong Kong Central.
This walk is around 4km which may take around an hour or longer. It is also paved with little incline - perfect for all ages. You can get there with all modes of public transport hence very easily accessible. You can head up to the peak by taking the Peak Tram - which is also the most scenic way up. A 2-way ticket for adults is only HK$52 which is around SGD$9 (as of 2020).
For the Advanced Hiker - Twin Peaks Hike

If you are an experienced hiker, you can try hiking Twin Peaks - which is known as one of the most challenging hikes on Hong Kong Island. The Twin Peaks trail consists of more than 1,000 steps up to the peak! While tough, the view from the top of the peak is definitely worth the effort. This trail is around 5km, but the hard work will be paid off! When you get to the top, don’t forget to take a breather while you admire the view from above before heading back down.
To get to the start of the trail, you can take either bus 6 or 66 from Exchange Square all the way to Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park. Once you arrive, there will be signs that will lead you to a trail map and a set of steps. From there, your journey to the top of the peak starts!
For the Rural Hiker - Dragon’s Back Hike

Dragon’s Back hike is known as one of Hong Kong’s best urban hikes, and one of the most popular hikes in general. This is as it is easily accessible and easy to complete. The view from the trail is also stunning - without any tall buildings in the way - as it is surrounded by nature, beaches and the sea! At the top, you will be able to see Shek O beach and beyond - a truly magnificent view.
To get there, take the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) to Shau Kei Wan Station. Once you arrive, exit at A3 and take bus 9 at the Shau Kei Wan Bus Terminal. Alight at To Tei Wan, Dragon’s Back station and follow the path up the hill to the hike.
For the Adventurous Hiker - Lantau Peak

If you are feeling adventurous, or in need of something different, take a day trip to Lantau Island. Here you are able to do multiple things from visiting the Lantau Buddha to visiting Disneyland and even hiking! While you are in Lantau Island you should visit Lantau Peak, the second highest peak in Hong Kong. While hiking to the top, make sure you take time to admire the view around - a nice break from the hustle of the city.
For the Urban Hiker - Lion Rock

Lion Rock is one of the most iconic mountains that can be seen along the Kowloon mountain range. It’s name came about as its rocky outcrop resembles a crouching lion. On top of the trail, you are able to get a bird's eye view of Kowloon, Victoria Harbour and multiple parts of Hong Kong. While this hike is rather short, there is a consistent incline top the top.
Getting to the trail is very accessible via public transport. All you have to do is to take the Green MTR Line to Wong Tai Sin MTR station and begin your hike there!
Hiking Tips
Before hiking, remember to pack some food and water - as you might be under the sun for a while. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes (and even bring some poles if you want) as hikes in Hong Kong may not be as easy as you might think! Plan your trip in advance, take note of the weather, bus timings and how to get there before heading out!
And finally, stay safe, hydrated and go forth and hike!
