Rottnest is one of Perth’s most popular attractions. Known for their adorable quokkas, amazing views, and endless bike trails, there’s plenty to do on this tiny island. Here’s our complete guide of things to eat, see, and do at Rotto.

You can’t go past the Rottnest Bakery without stopping for one of their delicious baked goods. Scarf down one of their freshly-baked Jam and Cream Donuts before embarking on your adventure, or grab a couple of their savoury pies to snack on on the road. Looking to cool off after a scorching morning? The variety of gelato flavours are sure to help beat the heat.

Looking to put your feet up after a long day of exploring? Frankie’s is the perfect place. Although they’re open for all three meals, their dinner service offers pizzas, pastas, and salads made with locally-sourced ingredients. There is also a selection of wine and beer for diners looking for a tipple. The playground opposite the restaurant will keep the kids busy while the adults chill out - fun for the whole family.

See

This historic lighthouse was the first in Australia with a rotating beam. It was built in the 1800s on the highest point of Rottnest to allow mariners to find their way to the Swan River Colony. Today, the roof offers a glimpse of Perth city from a unique vantage point, 80 metres above sea level. Even though the last lightkeeper left in 1990, volunteers still do hourly guided tours of this iconic building.

West End Boardwalk

Rottnest may be most famous for its quokkas, but it is also home to a variety of other fascinating mammals, including New Zealand Fur Seals, Humpback Whales, and Bottlenose Dolphins. On the Western end of Rottnest sits the Cathedral Rocks, which is the perfect place to spot the local marine life. The Ngank Wen Bidi, a guided walking trail that loops around the entire Western part of the island, takes guests through the most remote parts of the island.

Do

Take selfies with a Quokka

Have you even been to Rottnest if you haven’t taken a Quokka selfie? These adorable critters, known as the “world’s happiest animal” have no natural predators on Rottnest island, so they’re happy to approach humans, and most even oblige with a selfie or two. However, be sure not to touch or feed the Quokkas as this can disrupt their natural behaviour and could even result in a hefty fine.

For the full Rottnest experience, guests should get underwater. The water around the island is home to over a hundred species of tropical fish, and coral, as well as about 13 shipwrecks that are perfect for exploring. Snorkeling gear is available for hire from stores on the island, so there’s no need to worry about equipment.
