Neon lights and spaceport-styled windows are the first things to enter your line of sight when you step off the escalator and arrive on the third floor of 313@somerset. Welcome to New World Carnival, a virtual-reality theme park where stranger worlds await.

The virtual reality theme park opened in 2020, and has expanded to include an outlet at 313@somerset in addition to its Marina Square branch. We visited New World Carnival’s Somerset outlet for an afternoon of thrills, and here are some of the highlights from our trip.

A wide variety of games to choose from

New World Carnival currently has eight themed games, which are sectioned into various rooms depending on which games you choose. From escaping zombies to fighting in a viking war, there’s something for everyone at this interactive attraction. A single game package costs $40, which entitles you to 60 game credits.

Each themed-room costs 20 game credits, with the exception of “Zombie Way”, which will set you back 30 credits due to its free-roaming gameplay. For the horror enthusiast, try out “The Others”, which pits you and your friends against a vengeful spirit in a haunted room as you stare down ghosts threatening to kill you.

Immersive gameplay

Don’t be fooled by the seemingly large empty rooms that occupy most of the theme park’s floor space — while it may seem sparse upon first glance, the real fun begins as soon as you strap on the virtual reality headset, and begin your adventure that covers every inch of the room.

You’ll be instantly transported into an expansive virtual world, where you become part of the action as you blast zombies pouring out of a train carriage, or fight off supernatural beings on a bridge as an elite ninja. With plenty of special effects and fun surprises in store, you won’t even notice that you’re still in the real world.

New World Carnival doubles as a board game and co-working space, and offers special packages to cater to both functions. From $5 per hour with a minimum purchase of 1 drink per person, you’re free to play any of New World’s displayed board games on its shelves. From traditional favourites such as Monopoly and Cluedo to newer entries like Exploding Kittens and Singapore-themed games, visitors will be spoilt for choice.

Arcade minigames galore

While its virtual reality games are located in its Somerset outlet, you can find a wide variety of arcade games at the theme park’s Marina Square outlet. Try your hand at first-person shooter games, or choose to challenge your skills at wide array of claw machine games.

New World Carnival intends on expanding its library of games, with refreshing new experiences planned for future months. As the theme park continues to diversify its offerings amidst the pandemic, we’re looking forward to seeing what exciting new things will be in store.
