Manhattan is where most tourists will prefer to hang out, given its popularity among the five Boroughs. But perhaps it is about time for travellers to start venturing outside of Manhattan when touring New York City. In the Bronx, the northernmost borough of the Big Apple, one can escape the crowds whilst discovering an entirely new side of the city.

Unbeknown to most, the Bronx is actually home to New York City’s one and only freshwater river. Choose between canoeing or paddling at the annually held Bronx River Flotilla in May, is a five-mile paddling trip. The once-polluted Bronx River has since been cleaned up and is quite the sight for sore eyes.

Attempt a hiking trail, explore the beautiful Orchard Beach, tour the Bartow-Pell Mansion or simply relax along the 13-mile saltwater shoreline. For nature-loving travellers, the park is also home to a diverse range of plant and animal species (such as the majestic Osprey).
