Instead of only sticking to the malls around the causeway point, you should consider going further and exploring the rest of JB (Johor Bahru). There are many things you can do in each area, so here is a guide on what you can do.
Austin Heights
The young and hungry should definitely visit Austin Heights. Not only does it have an instagrammable Little Paris with french street decor and cafes, but it also has the Austin Heights Water and Adventure Park. Get your adrenaline buzz going with height obstacles.
Shopaholics will also enjoy the megamall, Aeon Bukit Indah.
Danga Bay
Unlike Austin Heights, Danga Bay is relatively near to immigration checkpoints. As its name suggests, it is a coastal beach area facing Singapore and many go there to enjoy the sea. For a romantic evening, you could explore the Danga World Theme Park (just next to Danga Beach) which features a majestic carousel and Ferris wheel.
The Bay is also opposite the Istana Bukit Serene where you can take pictures with the palace’s famous crown monument. While along this track of an authentic cultural experience, you can also head to Rumah Limas which has preserved Kampong Houses.
Yong Peng
This area is slightly more than an hour away from Singapore, commonly accessed via Tuas checkpoint instead of Woodlands. It may seem like a hassle but it is worth it to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Those born in the year of the dragon might identify with the numerous structures dedicated to the sacred creature. The Black Dragon Cave Temple is a spectacular sight of nature and the longest Dragon Tunnel in the world is also nearby. Enter through the jaws of the dragon statue and see where it takes you.
There are also many other notable temples in the area such as Tian Pao Kong temple.
Desaru
I’m California Dreaming on this white sandy beach of Desaru lined with casuarina trees. But this tropical beach paradise also has other family-friendly attractions which will bring nature to you.
Families enjoy Desaru Crocodile Farm, Fruit Farm, Ostrich Farm, and end off the night with a Firefly Tour.
JBCC and KOMTAR
Even if you don’t want to explore further than the immigration checkpoints area, there is more to the vicinity than shopping malls. Have a walk down the Tan Hiok Nee Cultural Street or make a visit to the Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque Building. You may just be pleasantly surprised by what you find.
