Over the years, veganism has been gaining traction not just in Singapore but also all around the world. With an increasing number of vegan spots to more plant-based meats sprouting to popularity in the past year, we just know that it will continue to get better in 2021. So, dip your toes into a plant-based lifestyle this year with this pledge to be vegan this January!
What is Veganuary?
Veganuary is a non-profit organisation encouraging people to go vegan in January and beyond. In 2020, over 400,000 people pledged to try a vegan diet, with over 600 brands and restaurants promoting this campaign. Veganuary supports people and businesses moving to a plant-based diet as a way to protect the environment, prevent animal suffering, and improve health.
The Veganuary challenge started in the UK in 2014. To this day, over a million have signed up for this pledge all around the world, according to their website, and have been popular ever since. Veganuary, the non-profit with the same name, has worked with multiple businesses to increase the awareness of veganism in shops and restaurants, making veganism more accessible in our daily lives.
How Can We Participate?
Take the Veganuary pledge by signing up on their website. This will give you access to easy meal plans, delicious recipes and helpful tips to get you through the month. This pledge is entirely free and you can subscribe anytime! Take a step further and follow their Facebook page and look out for fun activities and deals!
Why Should We Participate?
Some of the many reasons why we should be participating in Veganuary this January is the benefits towards not only our health, but especially the environment.
Having a plant-based lifestyle with an increase of fruits and vegetables has been linked to both preventing and treating type 2 diabetes, and reducing the risk of many other health issues. As a personal experience of going plant-based for a few months, having this lifestyle does improve your mood as well as your energy levels!
Going plant-based can also help with the environment by reducing water pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. The production of plant-based foods requires less energy from fossil fuels, as compared to other types of food.
Where to Eat This Veganuary
In Singapore, there are several restaurants that have decided to partner up and highlight vegan dishes in their restaurant. Need restaurant ideas to start out this challenge? Check out our article on plant-based dining in Singapore below! If you rather eat at home, many supermarkets offer an array of plant-based meats to try for all those who are starting this diet!
