This underground hideaway is a vision of rustic Victorian Style, one that mixes old and new. Beneath Driver Lane is a basement bar located in an old bank vault in the CBD. With a domed ceiling, brick arched booths, low hanging lamps and walls cluttered with black and white photos, it is sure to take your breath away. The bar is well-known for wine and it’s extensive drinks menu where drinks are made with precision. Catalyst Fire, the signature cocktail is made using the smoke of Palo Santo while Martinis are made with liquid nitrogen. Check out this exquisite bar anytime from 4pm onwards from Mondays to Saturdays and 6pm onwards on Sundays.

A late-night, Melbourne take on a New-York bar, Bar Margaux is a must-visit bar with “snack-sized” cocktails. The door to enter this bar is plain and simply says MGX but once in, soak in the New-York-inspired decor with chequerboard flood, shiny white tiles with booths, and a golden back bar lighting. The cocktails here lean more towards the classics such as Brand Alexander, Black Velvet, and Gimlet. Bar Margaux also has “snack-sized” cocktails for you to try. Pop in anytime daily after 4pm.

You can find the entrance to this speakeasy bar in a clothing store past a few racks. With a door painted charcoal, enter the door and find Lay Low Bar which was originally an old workshop. With a more classy atmosphere, this bar has potted plants hanging from the ceiling, polished concrete flooring, warm lighting, and a cocktail-inspired mural by local artist Hannah Simkin. 

The cocktails at this bar have been designed by Oscar Eastman, providing a special twist on some cocktails. Some of the must-try cocktails are ‘Seddon Sling’ that mixes Vietnamese mint and ginger beer with bourbon, ‘Melbourne Moonshine’, a cocktail that uses lapsang souchong tea, or ‘Little Orange’ that includes a touch of sherry and bitter orange.

Jungle Boy

This tiki-inspired speakeasy bar is a one-of-a-kind bar in Melbourne. Hidden behind the refrigerator door in a sandwich shop, this tropical paradise serves exclusive rum cocktails in Tiki mugs. Try one of their exotic rum cocktails such as ‘B Bizzle Swizzle’ which has rum, lime, falernum, and nutmeg.

Goldilocks

A rooftop bar located four floors above a Chinese restaurant, Goldilocks is a speakeasy bar that is a bit more tricky to find. After finding the bar, it has wonderful cocktails with great views. Known to be one of Melbourne’s greatest rooftop bars, the cocktail list at Goldilocks changes to fit the season.

Hihou which means secret treasure is a Japanese influence bar with a minimalist layout. With low stone tables, they encourage guests to take out their shoes NE must immerse themselves in this exquisite atmosphere. This bar is known for its remarkable hospitality with an extensive drink selection from seasonal fruit cocktails to plum wine or hot shochu, a potato-based Japanese liquor.
