Dubai may be known for its exciting cityscape and shopping malls, but just a short drive from the city is a rustic landscape waiting to be explored. Here’s all the information you need for a trip off the beaten track.
Explore Old Dubai
Rub shoulders with the locals in the old quarter of Dubai. Many of the buildings predate Dubai’s transformation into a concrete jungle. The tranquility of the old town is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city – we wouldn’t blame you for mistaking it for Rome! Spend at least half a day sampling authentic local cuisine, touring the historical Al Bastakiya Quarter, and viewing art in the XVA gallery.
Go Camel Riding
Journey across the red sand dunes on the back of a camel. This is one of the most relaxing experiences ever – just the sun, sand, and the soft sound of the camel’s footsteps. Experienced guides help guests get acquainted with the animal, and the proper techniques to ride comfortably. Most camel riding packages in Dubai come with dinner and entertainment at a Bedouin encampment after the ride – definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience to be savoured.
Indulge your senses at the Miracle Garden
Even though it’s man-made, it’s still one of the most gorgeous attractions in Dubai. Launched on Valentine’s Day in 2013, it spans over 72,000 square metres, and features over 250 million plants. Home to the largest floral arrangement in the world – an Airbus A380 decked out in flowers – this is the perfect place for nature lovers to take some epic pictures.
Explore Al Zorah Nature Reserve
Flamingos? In Dubai? It’s more likely than you think. A vibrant mangrove ecosystem spanning over a million square kilometres, this nature reserve is home to over 60 species of birds, and an 18-hole championship golf course. Kayak through the river, walk along the sandy beaches, and swim in the turquoise lagoons of the reserve – you won’t even remember you’re in Dubai.
