One of the best traditions for Halloween is getting scared silly watching horror and thriller movies. But the fun doesn’t have to end on Halloween. Why not stay home, stay safe and stay spooked by watching these scary movies?
Goodnight Mommy
As long as a movie has creepy kids and an even creepier parent, it has the potential to scare anyone half to death - and Goodnight Mommy certainly does the trick. This Austrian thriller follows a pair of twin boys who are accompanied by their mother, whose face is always covered in bandages. The mystery continues as the boys grow wary that the woman under the bandages may not be their mother.
Donnie Darko
Set aptly during Halloween, Donnie Darko follows a troubled teenager with doomsday-type visions. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, this classic psychological thriller also boasts an all-star cast like Maggie Gyllenhaal, Patrick Swayze, Drew Barrymore and more. Just a warning, the man in the large rabbit suit may give you nightmares long after the movie is over!
The Shining
Arguably one of the most popular scary movies of all time, The Shining is the film adaptation of Stephen King’s bestseller, and transfers the horror from the pages to the screen pretty perfectly. The film follows a family who heads to an isolated hotel where an ominous presence influences the father to go on a murderous rampage. In addition to that, his son sees foreboding visions that amplify the tension.
Dark Water
No scary movie list is complete without a Japanese horror film! Dark Water is set in an old apartment building where the spirit of a little girl follows a mother-son duo who had just moved in. The unsettling sight of a young girl in a raincoat appearing and disappearing is definitely not a happy sight for me. If you want to get spooked, then this is the film you should put on.
Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum
Another Asian horror movie, Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum is based on a real-life psychiatric hospital of the same name and follows a web series crew who visits the hospital to livestream video. Get transported to this monstrous place through the crew's livestream as they explore the spooky halls.
Paranormal Activity
The first film in the Paranormal Activity franchise, this film uses videos that have a homemade look to them. Personally, that takes the cake in making the whole film unnerving because it felt as though the paranormal experiences that happened to the characters could happen to me! Perfect to keep you looking over your shoulder in your own bed for nights to come, this film is definitely a Halloween must watch.
