From fashion to art, Lisbon’s shopping scene has it all. Whether you love to splurge on luxury goods or hunt down the cheapest bargains in vintage shops, Lisbon’s streets are uniquely historic and vibrant with some being well known for their art murals and architecture. Here’s our guide on where to shop and what you should get.

Where to shop in Lisbon

Avenida Da Liberdade

Widely known as the top 35 most expensive street in the world, this shopping avenue houses international luxury brands such as Burberry, Louis Vuitton, and Miu Miu. Historically, it was an area restricted only to the rich with two gates to do so.

But shopping isn’t the only thing you can do here. The architecture of the avenue is worth admiring. The intricate black and white mosaic floors were designed to represent the waves of the Tagus and Douro river and there are statues commemorating WWI soldiers and political figures throughout history.

While this street houses well-known brands too, it mainly caters to the middle-market and has local novelty shops selling socks and accessories. It is also one of the liveliest streets in Lisbon with many street performances ongoing.

Chiado

For a historical-exploratory-shopping experience, head to this district which has cafes, floral shops, and bookstores that have been around for centuries. This is the best place to go if you are on the lookout for unique furnishings such as linen products and vintage furniture.

The world’s oldest bookstore as noted by the Guinness Book of Records can be found here. Livraria Bertrand franchise had its humble beginnings in 1732 in Lisbon and has been in Chiado since 1773.

Chiado also has a good shopping mall, Armazéns do Chiado, which has a food court and fashion boutiques.

Bairro Alto

A little more trendy than Chiado, Bairro Alto has young and up-coming designer boutiques and cool street art. During the day, learn about making azulejos (Portuguese tiles) and in the evenings, watch the neighborhood turn into a popular nightlife scene with many bars and clubs in the area.

Flea Markets in Lisbon

The most popular flea market to attend is the Feira da Ladra on Tuesdays and Saturdays. It has an extensive range of pre-loved goods. Other flea markets that you can attend if you miss this one is the LX Market on Sundays and Crafts & Design Market (first weekend of the month).

There is nothing like shopping in a palace, especially the 19-century neo-Moorish palace that Embaixada is in. Feel like true royalty as you get served in Portuguese brand boutiques and wander around the building admiring its bronze sculptures.
