From observation towers to rooftop bars and even thrill rides, here is a list of where to get the very best views in Vienna:

One of the most prominent symbols of Vienna, St. Stephen's Cathedral towers over Vienna at 134 metres. So symbolic it is that even Manner Schnitten, a famous and popular Austrian confectionery, uses its likeness in their logo.  Ascend the towers for a wonderful view of Vienna, and look out for the colorful tiles on the roof creating a double-headed eagle (an imperial insignia), as well as the Vienna’s coat of arms. Ascend the towers for a wonderful view of Vienna.

Located in Schönbrunn Palace Park, this airy, classic cafe is not only a magnificent piece of architecture, the building itself much to behold, but also offers a great view of Schönbrunn Palace and the city beyond. Enjoy the view over a couple of lovely Viennese pastries and a cup of coffee.

3. The Donauturm

Standing at 252 meters, the Donauturm is the tallest structure in Austria. It only takes 35 seconds to reach the top. The viewing platforms are located 155 meters above sea level, providing unparalleled views of the city and the Danube, and to enrich your experience, there are interactive panoramic screens that provide information on the surrounding sights.

The Natural History Museum of Vienna offers something more culturally, and you can join in their “The View from the Roof” tours, held every Wednesday and Saturday, for a cultural-history walk through the museum, and then up to the rooftop terrace with a fantastic view of Vienna, which they guarantee will be an unforgettable experience (access to the rooftop can only be gained through this tour). Book your tickets for the museum here:

5. The Riesenrad

The Viennese Giant Ferris Wheel is a 19th-century landmark that stands at 65 meters tall. Aboard the iconic red gondolas, the entire trip takes about 12-15 minutes. While there are taller places to get a view over the city, it is the experience here that we are going for, and is an especially great activity for families and couples visiting Vienna.

Address: Riesenradplatz 1, 1020 Wien, Austria

6. Haus des Meeres

You might think that an aquarium is a rather strange place to view the city from, but once you get a look at the city from the top of the Haus des Meeres, you’ll understand why it's in our picks. The terrace of the café on the 11th floor offers a magnificent 360° view of Vienna. The best part? No ticket is needed to access the terrace!

Address: Fritz-Grünbaum-Platz 1, 1060 Wien, Austria

7. Praterturm

If you’re a thrill-seeker, this would be the experience for you. Found in the Wurstelprater amusement park, at 117 meters high, this swing carousel definitely isn’t for the faint-hearted. To add on to the fear factor, it rotates at speeds up to 60 km/h! However, those brave enough to take up the challenge will definitely be rewarded with the panoramic views from the top.
