It is often said that the essence of a city lies within its markets, as is the case in Vienna, a reflection the city's charisma at different times. The best part is that different markets offer different insights into the lives of the locals living there. Navigating the local market scene may be confusing for a foreigner, but fret not! We’ve rounded up some of the best markets to visit to get a taste of local life in Vienna:
Naschmarkt
Naschmarkt is Vienna’s most popular market, and with good reason. Be sure to come here with an empty stomach! This colourful and vibrant market is home to about 120 different stalls and restaurants, serving up a range of different worldly cuisines and delicacies. Try some gorgeous Israeli-Oriental food such as shakshuka (eggs with vegetables) at Neni, or go for some fresh seafood at Umar, which many consider to be some of the best in Vienna. You’ll be able to find many Viennese specialty products such as wine and cheese here as well. One of the highlights is the Flohmarkt (flea market) that springs up every Saturday. Here, you’ll be able to find antique items, as well as a range of vintage toys, records, clothes, and many more.

Karmelitermarkt
Karmelitermarkt is a charming market located in the Karmeliter district, a short walk from the Old Town center. Aside from the array of typical market produce on sale here, a Bauernmarkt (farmers' market) is held on Saturdays, showcasing a range of seasonal crops, specialty products and freshly baked bread, pastries and viennoiseries. A range of exciting dining establishments are also located here. Grab some delicious burgers at Weinschenke am Karmelitermarkt, or sit down and people watch with some kaffee und kuchen (coffee and cake) at cafemima.

Kutschkermarkt
One of the two only street markets left in Vienna, Kutschkermarkt has a warm and easygoing vibe, and is popular with families. On Saturdays, a Bauernmarkt is held, offering a lovely assortment of organic produce for sale. Florists are also abundant at this market, and fill the market with vivid colours. Here, you are also able to find a range of nice restaurants. At Takan's Delikatessen, you’ll be able to sample delicious fish specialty dishes. Café Himmelblau is recommended for their home-made cakes and tarts. Also check out Pöhl & Mayr for some excellent artisanal cheese and deli products.

Brunnenmarkt
Located in Ottakring (16th district) and one of the two last street markets in Vienna, Brunnenmarkt is also one of the largest and most ethnically-diverse. Nicknamed “Little Istanbul”, you will find a variety of affordably priced meats, fresh produce, spices here. Over time, it has merged with the adjacent Yppenmarkt, where a range of multicultural activities are often held.
Thanks to this, this area is always bustling. Many exciting dining concepts have sprung up in this area, such as Restaurant Wetter, serving Ligurian food. Another popular establishment that is worth the visit is Cafe C.I.. Bring back a bottle of jam from Staud’s Wien, whose artisanal jams are staples of upscale food halls and leading hotels.

Rochusmarkt
A small market located in an upscale neighborhood near the Ringstrasse. You’ll be able to find a wide range of specialty cheeses and deli offerings here. There is also a section dedicated to freshly cut flowers.
This market is popular with the locals, with many cafés offering freshly baked pastries and cakes are available nearby as well.

Christmas markets
Nothing will bring on the joy of Christmas more than Christmas markets in Vienna. If you’re in Vienna during the festive season, you’ll be delighted to find an assortment of stalls hawking various food items (mulled wine!), christmas decorations and trinkets, and a range of other handmade crafts that make the perfect little presents.
On weekends, you’ll find choirs singing Christmas carols in the markets, adding on to the festive spirit. Don’t miss Christmas World on Rathausplatz, one of the biggest in Vienna. For something a little more unique, Art Advent - Art & Crafts on Karlsplatz offers a focus on handmade products by local craftsmen.
