It is often said that the essence of a city lies within its markets, as is the case in Vienna, a reflection the city's charisma at different times. The best part is that different markets offer different insights into the lives of the locals living there. Navigating the local market scene may be confusing for a foreigner, but fret not! We’ve rounded up some of the best markets to visit to get a taste of local life in Vienna:

Naschmarkt is Vienna’s most popular market, and with good reason. Be sure to come here with an empty stomach! This colourful and vibrant market is home to about 120 different stalls and restaurants, serving up a range of different worldly cuisines and delicacies. Try some gorgeous Israeli-Oriental food such as shakshuka (eggs with vegetables) at Neni, or go for some fresh seafood at Umar, which many consider to be some of the best in Vienna. You’ll be able to find many Viennese specialty products such as wine and cheese here as well. One of the highlights is the Flohmarkt (flea market) that springs up every Saturday. Here, you’ll be able to find antique items, as well as a range of vintage toys, records, clothes, and many more.
