I remember the best fish and chips I have ever tasted — I was sitting by the pier in Sydney visiting one of their famous fish markets enjoying their fresh beer-battered fish and chips. They were crispy, salty and sour all at once and their tartar sauce truly spices up the entire dish. Everyday I still wish I could get the chance to visit the place again and maybe once the pandemic passes, even you can get the chance to try! For now, these are some of the five places in Singapore that remind me of the best fish and chips in Sydney!
Fish and Chicks (Halal)
What attracted me to this place was their salted egg dishes and back then we were all crazy about salted egg (especially me, up till today). I got their piping hot plate of Salted Egg Fish and Chips for only $11.60! The fish itself is huge and guaranteed to keep you full and both their batter and fries are fried to the crisp which was something I personally preferred. Their humble stalls also have other local flavours to offer such as Chilli Crab Fish and Chips and other food items that could satisfy your possible cravings!

Fish Tales (Halal)
Three words — value for money. Truly a hidden gem in SCAPE especially when the food around there can be quite expensive. This place is known for their low prices but high quality food. My favourite have definitely got to be their Buaurre Au Citron! For just $9.90, you get a delectable plate of battered fish and thick fries with a side of garlic lemon butter sauce that cuts the oiliness of the fried dish. So, if you’re ever looking for an affordable plate of fish and chips around town, head down to Fish Tales!

Shaker Lakers
Shaker Lakers is born with the concept of East meets West. Tucked away in a hawker centre in Yishun, the humble stall has an extensive menu of fusion food items that includes vegetarian options as well! One of their best sellers also happens to be their Fish and Chips at only $9! Their take on it is pretty classical but many have complimented the dish on being light, crispy and simply just comforting.

Genius Central Singapore
Homemade tartar sauce, gluten-free batter coated evenly on the red snapper for only $19, a steal! The group believes that the human body should receive the best quality nourishments and one way that they have carried this out is by focusing their menu on loads of plant-based, organic and/or whole-foods dishes. So, if you’re looking for a less sinful plate of fish and chips, head down to Genius Central Singapore!

Molly Malone’s Irish Pub
It’s impossible to miss the pub’s fish and chips in the menu especially when it has its own place in the menu — bolded and capitalised. I’ve heard of their fish and chips a few times and several food bloggers have raved about it so I did wonder what the hype was all about until I realised that all that hype truly lived up to its expectation. Molly’s Famous Fish and Chips costs a whopping $20 but it is definitely your money’s worth. Their secret? Their batter. A very safeguarded secret that definitely baits customers for more.
