One of the major attractions in any city is a place where you can see the view. Not only do you get to see the city in all its glory, but you will also feel as if you are on top of the world (after a steep climb). Likewise, Penang has some breathtaking views that you should make an effort to see.

The Kek Lok Si Temple sprawls across ten acres of land, with different segments and pavilions. It is home to the Liberation Pond, filled with turtles (represent longevity) and pagodas with Buddhist relics. The open-air terrace view from the top, next to the huge Mercy of Goddess, or Kuan Yin statue is stunning. There is also a garden next to it with adorable statues of all the zodiacs. If you are feeling particularly fit, you can choose to climb the yellow pagoda (in the picture below) for a small donation fee, which goes to the upkeep of the place. P.S. The spiraling narrow staircase gave me a killer workout.

Taking the funicular railway to get up the hill is an interesting experience. Being one of the steepest in the world, you have to sit and let the tram carry up almost vertically. Once you reach the top though, you will feel like you have entered a new world. The weather is nice and refreshingly cool at the top, with lush greenery that will make you feel like you are in a European country. You can also get a buggy ride to take you around the compounds.

Recently opened in December 2018, the Habitat is within the Penang Hill compounds. It has a canopy and treetop walk giving you unparalleled views of the city. You can also choose to zipline or enjoy swings.

Do not be deceived by the facade of this building which appears to be crumbling. It is the tallest skyscraper in town and features a Rainbow Skywalk on the 68 floor. Brave souls can look through the transparent glass to the bottom. With restaurants and an observation deck, this is a popular spot to see fireworks on New Year’s and on other special festivities.
