With a rich culture and history that are clearly shown in the architecture and monuments of Lisbon, you may be wondering about where you can fill in the gaps about things you want to know more of. A good place to start is always a museum. There are 62 museums in Lisbon but we have narrowed it down to these top 6 for you to pursue. 

National Museum of Ancient Art

To learn and feel about how a place began, start with a museum that goes way back in time to ancient art, starting from the twelfth century with paintings, jewelry from Europe, Africa, and Asia. The highlight obviously being Portuguese artists like Nuno Goncalves. 

Insider Tip: Be sure to put some time aside for a walk through the gardens and a meal at the restaurant overlooking the Tagus River. 

Museu Do Fado

It has often be said that good music evokes emotions to make and keep memories with. This museum explains how fado music developed with many exhibitions of iconic Portuguese singers and their songs. 

Calouste Gulbenkian Museum

Designed to complement its surroundings and nature, this museum won the Valmor Prize in 1975 for its architectural design and landscaping. It hosts a variety of artworks from Egypt, Islam, and Graeco-Roman collected by Calouste Gulbenkian. 

MAAT - Art, Architecture and Technology Museum

Located along the Tagus river, in a utopian/dystopian design, MAAT is one of the most popular museums. Many works featured are controversial and current. It also has a beautiful open rooftop.

National Azulejo Museum

Belonging to the Madre de Deus Convent in the past, the museum features a stunning baroque church with “azulejo” which are Portuguese tiles that depict Lisbon before the 1755 earthquake. You can get unique souvenirs at the shop and have a tea break at the cafe. 

National Coach Museum

For a truly royal experience, visit the Museu Nacional dos Coches which was created by Queen Amelia of Portugal. It features royal coaches and carriages in grand furnishings and gold ornaments. Previously hosted in the old riding ring of the Palace of Belem, the museum also has paintings and antiques from the early 19 century.
