Copenhagen is a city full of beautiful sights and fun activities. It has its share of grand architecture, large museums, and quaint neighbourhoods, much like the rest of Europe. However, there are several things you can see and do only in Copenhagen, and here are 4 of them.
Visit the Little Mermaid’s Strange Sister.
One of Copenhagen’s most famous attractions is the Little Mermaid, a statue based on the character created by Hans Christian Andersen. However, there are usually many, many tourists crowded around the statue, and it's likely that you will have to fight for a good view and photo. So once you’re done, why not walk a few minutes and visit the Genetically Modified Little Mermaid.
Created by Danish professor Bjørn Nørgaard, this weird version of the Little Mermaid is just one out of a group of sculptures called “The Genetically Modified Paradise”, which includes other altered sculptures, like that of the first couple Adam and Eve, located at a square nearby. A creative comment on postmodern society, these abstract sculptures, and especially the Genetically Modified Little Mermaid, serve as a strange but unique counterpoint to our everyday lives, and would definitely add to the Danish experience.

Walk through a Colourful and Multicultural Urban Park
Located in one of the most ethnically diverse neighbourhoods in the whole of Denmark, you’ll find the bright and colourful Superkilen Park. The park is divided into three colours: the Green Park is a traditional park, the Black Market is a square with curvy lines drawn all over the ground, and the Red Square is the brightest and most urban of the three.
This park doesn’t just stand out for its colours. Reflecting its neighbourhood, the park is filled with structures, items, and artwork that represent each of the 60 nationalities that reside there, including things like a Moroccan fountain, a Russian neon sign, and a Thai boxing ring, creating a truly special blend that contributes to the vibrancy of the area. So why not make a trip down to this park that is not only beautiful in its interesting design, but also in its internationality.

Ski on Top of a Power Plant
For a truly one-of-a-kind experience, visit Copenhill, a green ski slope built on the top of a waste management and recycling centre. Why wait till winter, when the temperatures are freezing and the snow is damp, when you can ski down this evergreen slope, which also offers a great view of the city on the way down. Ski lessons are also available should you want to learn!
Not one for skiing? No worries, because you can hike up the slopes as well, allowing you to enjoy the sights at your own pace, while guided tours are also available. For something more intensive, there is also a rock wall spanning the entire height of the building below. If you’re feeling hungry after all the exercise, head to the cafe for a meal at one of Copenhagen’s most unique buildings.

Travel Back in Time to a Hippie Freetown
The town of Christiania is a strange and wonderful place located in Copenhagen that is unlike any other. What used to be a military base has been transformed into a hippie town, where its residents live by rules separate from that of the Danish government.
It is most well-known for its Green Light District where marijuana was sold, which was illegal in the rest of the city. While the sale of cannabis is no longer allowed, this part of the town’s past is still clear in the souvenirs sold there and in the graffiti plastered on the buildings.
Throughout the town, there are plenty of cafes and restaurants for you to grab a meal at. Christiania has its own share of live music venues too, from cosy cafes to intimate bars. Perhaps what is most striking about the town is the artwork covering the walls. More than just your standard graffiti, the art really adds life and character to this already lively town, so be sure to take plenty of photos to remember your experience here.
So that was 4 unique things that you can only do in the Danish capital. Pay a visit to any of these 4 attractions you’re sure to make your trip to Copenhagen one to remember for years to come.
