Dubai is a tourist paradise, with shopping havens and plenty to do. But it’s also a strict Muslim country, and hundreds of tourists have been arrested in the country for breaching their strict laws. Here’s our roundup of some of the strangest laws in Dubai – be mindful of them on your trip!

Swearing in public

Swearing in public is forbidden, as it is a disruption of public peace. Citizens and tourists who swear in public can be imprisoned, or fined up to USD$3,000. Making an indecent gesture in public could result in immediate deportation. This rule extends to electronic communications as well, so be sure to proofread those texts.

Public displays of affection

Dubai is a strict Muslim country, so it’s no surprise their laws are a lot more stringent than other countries. Public displays of affection such as kidding and petting are considered an insult to public decency. Married couples are permitted to hold hands, but anything beyond that could result in jail time for both parties.

Using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs)

Virtual private networks allow internet users to change the web address location of their device to prevent the screening of online activity. It can also allow users to view content that may be banned locally. According to Dubai’s strict cybercrime laws, fines amounting to up to over USD$500,000 can be slapped on anyone found to be using VPN for unlawful activities.

Plane-spotting

While there is no explicit law against plane-spotting in Dubai, tourists have been arrested and jailed for breaching national security laws. If you’re looking to go plane-spotting, be sure to stick to the approved areas in Dubai International Airport, and avoid taking pictures of aircrafts, as citizens have previously been advised against this.
