When we think of Japan, many things come to mind: food, fashion, culture, and much more.
However, it can be argued that none are quite as ubiquitous to the land of the rising sun as onsens (hot springs) are. It’s not hard to see why they are adored by the Japanese people. Hot spring waters are rich in minerals, and are touted to be the secret to perfect, glowing skin.
While we are still unable to travel overseas, it doesn't mean we can’t relish in the same therapy here. These spas are sure to transport you straight to Japan without even boarding a flight.

Let loose at Yunomori Onsen & Spa, located in Kallang Wave Mall. This spa brings the full communal onsen experience to Singapore: everything will be laid bare — gender-segregated, of course. Entry to the onsen requires a day pass, which allows guests to roam around as long as they’d like. With a range of different baths such as the detoxifying soda bath and the deeply cleansing silk bath, it won’t be hard to while away an entire day here. Head to the accompanying café afterwards to fill yourself up with some tasty refreshments.

Elements Wellness

Not a fan of communal bathing? No problem. Head to Elements Wellness in Centrepoint for a more private experience, where you’ll be able to soak in energized ion water in a handcrafted Koyamaki wood tub. Koyamaki, the Japanese Umbrella Pine, is one of the most prized trees in Japan and upon contact with hot water, it releases a soothing aroma and essential oils that will nourish your body. The negative ions generated by the onsen water neutralises and removes radicals from the body that contribute to ageing. The experience here is completed with real Hinoki (Japanese Cypress) wood bath accessories, just like those you’d find in Japan. This is the place to be for the ultimate retreat.

If you're on a budget but still want to settle your wanderlust, mark down this destination. Located off Gambas Avenue, Sembawang Hot Spring Park is a natural hot spring in Singapore. Built during the Japanese Occupation of World War II in Singapore, this historical onsen has survived until today, and has recently been renovated into a proper park for all to enjoy. Soak your feet in the therapeutic waters, or have a go at making onsen eggs here. The best part? It's completely free of charge so you can save your onsen budget for a delicious meal afterwards. This hot spring park is a little out of the way, but it’s worth the visit and you'll definitely leave feeling refreshed.
Bonus: Joya Onsen Cafe

Located in Jurong, Joya Onsen Cafe is the new kid on the block. While they haven't opened their doors to public just yet, a quick peek through their InstaStories has got us stoked. Renovation is well underway, and very soon, we'll be able to officially add this to our list of onsens in Singapore. With ice baths, sauna rooms, and a zen garden for guests to relax in, they have the full suite of facilities (and more!) that'd you'd find at any onsen in Japan. Stay tuned for their opening, slated for end July/early August.
