Phnom Penh

Along the banks of the mighty Tonle Sap and Mekong River lies Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. Phnom Penh is a city with buzzing wet markets and grand French boulevards. It is, however, a city scarred with a dark past. Around 2 million people were killed during the Cambodian genocide under the Khmer Rouge regime. Some of the most well-preserved sites of the Cambodian genocide welcome visitors who wish to learn about Cambodia’s unfortunate history. While tourists mainly associate the city with the genocide, Phnom Penh is also home to a thriving art and culture scene that should not be overlooked. Iconic landmarks include the ancient Wat Phnom temple which the city owes its name to and the stunning Central Market.
