Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta (pronounced as “Jogjakarta”) is the heart of Javanese culture. Yogyakarta’s most iconic landmark is undoubtedly Borobudur, a 9th-century Buddhist temple that still holds the title of being the world’s largest Buddhist temple. The city is also home to the official residence of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta - the last Sultanate with political power in Indonesia. Yogyakarta is also known for its thriving art and culture industry, where some of the oldest performance art forms like wayang kulit (leather shadow puppet) and macapat (Javanese poetry) live on and continue to enchant locals and tourists alike.
