We came here for the rubber duckies bath. There were lots of rubber duckies. I mean like hundreds of them in the bath! I booked the private bath. My kids are 2 and 5. Kids in diapers can only be allowed in private bath. The diaper wasn't the reason why I reserve the private bath. It's the rubber ducks. There were literally hundreds of them swimming around in the bath with you. You get to dump the ducks in on your own. You don't get the rubber ducks in the public bath. The place is nice and tranquil. After bath, I book yet another private room for meals. The fee is waived when you have 2 or more guests ordering course meals I believe. I paid half that fee because it's only me with the course meal and the kids had their kids meal. The room overlooked a zen garden. You can order using a kiosk in the room. There are English menu available. Staff do not speak much English. This place is a nice downhill 10 min walk from the shimura-sakaue station. You'll pass a park on your way. But grab a cab on your way back. The uphill walk will be taxing if you have kids in tow like me. Kids and I love this place and long to be back again someday.
The Place
Housed in a tasteful Japanese-style building, with a beautiful zen garden within the onsen grounds, Maenohara Onsen Sayano Yudokoro has consistently ranked among the best onsens in Tokyo. Apart from onsen, Sayano Yudokoro also offers both dry and steam sauna, as well as a hot stone spa and a restaurant with views over the lush garden greenery. While this onsen is located slightly further away from the main attractions, its many special features make it a worthwhile place to visit.
Insider Tips
Apart from offering some of the most reasonable entry prices (JPY870 on weekdays), Sayano Yudokoro also allows guests to rent the rotemburo for an hour, catering to those who feel uncomfortable without clothes in front of others.

3 Feb 2020Great place, very reasonably priced, but also very popular, at least in the evening hours. If you don't speak Japanese, all the important information is available in English. Tattoos are not allowed. There is also a nice restaurant on site.

18 Jun 2020Very nice onsen. The outside area with several outdoor baths is super pretty. There is a steam bath where salt is provided to make a body scrub. Inside, a sauna, a hot bath and several massage nozzles are available. It is very clean and well maintained. The staff is friendly and helpful.
